The Breakfast Olympics!
Aldine Child Nutrition hosted their second Breakfast Olympics competition on Friday, May 17, 2013. This event was designed to reward schools for promoting breakfast and bring awareness to the importance of eating a healthy, nutritious breakfast each day. The competition consisted of various events for students to compete in such as jump roping, push -ups, a breakfast quiz bowl, football toss and more. The participating schools were: Mac Arthur Sr., Nimitz Sr., Eisenhower 9th, Aldine 9th, Drew Academy, Hambrick, Teague, Aldine Middle, Shotwell, Hill Intermediate, Marcella Intermediate, Eckert, Escamilla, Dunn Elementary, Magrill Elementary, Francis Elementary, Bussey Elementary and Goodman Elementary. Schools that participated were chosen based on their breakfast participation increase over the previous year.
Participating schools created a banner that they were able to show off during the opening ceremonies. Students were led in to the event by the Nimitz High School Drumline and the Marcella Intermediate choir sang the National Anthem. Breakfast Man carried in the Breakfast Olympic torch.

Benjamin O. Davis, Jr. High School opened with new serving areas, dining furniture and décor. Plans were designed to improve service and provide a pleasant eating environment for students.

Twelve Aldine ISD schools earn Healthier U.S. School Challenge Award
Twelve Aldine ISD schools received the Healthier U.S. School Challenge Award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This makes a total os 21 schools with this distinction in Aldine. This award has been established to recognize schools that create and maintain healthier school environments by providing nutrition education, nutritious food and beverage choices, physical education and opportunities for physical activity.
“These twelve schools earned this accomplishment through a team effort from the school principal, classroom teachers, physical education teachers and the child nutrition department,” said Dani Sheffield, Aldine ISD’s executive director of child nutrition services.
The twelve schools who received the award were:
Eckert Intermediate School (Silver)
Ermel Elementary School (Silver)
Escamilla Intermediate School (Silver)
Francis Elementary School (Silver)
Harris Academy (Silver)
Hill Intermediate School (Silver)
Magrill Elementary School (Silver)
Oleson Elementary School (Silver)
Orange Grove Elementary School (Silver)
Rayford Intermediate School (Silver)
Smith Academy School (Silver)
Thompson Elementary School (Silver)
Each school will gain community recognition and national recognition. They will also receive an award plaque and banner from the U.S. Department of Agriculture at a special award ceremony along with a monetary award.

2009 CHILD NUTRITION SHOWCASE WINNER!
The Aldine ISD Child Nutrition Program was awarded the 2009 National "Best Practices" Award by the School Nutrition Association for it's "Power Up with School Breakfast in Aldine ISD 2009" Campaign!
The School Nutrition Association is a national, nonprofit professional organization representing more than 55,000 members who provide high-quality, low-cost meals to students across the country.

Start Smart with a School Breakfast
Aldine Child Nutrition will continue their Power Up With School Breakfast campaign adding a new slogan, START SMART. There was a13% increase in the number of students who consumed a healthy and nutritious school breakfast last year and with the new "Breakfast at No Cost" we hope to ensure all students in Aldine ISD starts smart daily. Aldine Child Nutrition wants to continue to stress how important it is for students to start their day with breakfast so that they will be "Powered Up" and ready to learn!
